Band participates in Cal State University Long Beach Festival
Concert band and advanced concert band participated in the California State University Long Beach Wind Band Festival Friday, March 8.
About a dozen schools were evaluated on tone and pitch, sight reading and note accuracy by at least three adjudicators, or well-known individuals in the music sphere. The festival is a critique of each band’s performance and a gauge for improvement.
“We, as a group, sound good, but individually, each person needs some work. When you play together as a group, it’s easy to hide your mistakes,” oboist junior Caitlin Au.
Both bands held an afterschool rehearsal Wednesday, March 6. During these practices, director Corey Wicks focused the band to play difficult passages of music repeatedly.
“I think for my group, we [were] pretty well prepared. There are definitely a lot of things we still needed to work on, and it’s hard to get some of the inneration issues out of the way or playing together,” assistant director Katie Takahashi said. “I [expected] them to do well, and I’m hoping that the feedback we get from the adjudicators will help is do even better for our next festival.”
