Chamber Choir competes at Heritage Choral Festival

Chamber Choir won First Place Gold, Adjudicators Choice and Best in all Choral Divisions at the Heritage Choral Festival, a statewide competition, on Sunday, April 3 in San Francisco.

Walnut’s show set was composed of three songs: “Balleilakka,” “Tango to Evora” and “Oh No, John.” The choir has been practicing all three in other festivals and clinics since the beginning of the year.

“We kept practicing until we got to the best we could be, but even on the day of the performance, we knew we didn’t have it just right,” Chamber singer junior Raji Rajkumar said. “There’s always something you can work on. But we felt that we tried our best and were as good as we could be.”

A newcomer to the competition, Walnut unseated long-standing champion Fountain Valley High School. In addition, Chamber Director Lisa Lopez was encouraged to audition the choir for a high-end event.

“This was an important competition for us and for the reputation of the Walnut Choir Department. We wanted to make our first impression good in order for our voices to be heard,” Chamber singer senior Jeffrey Tan said.
