Chamber singers go to Mount San Antonio College

Chamber singers performed at Mount San Antonio College’s 25th Annual High School Chamber Singers Festival Wednesday, March 20.

Chamber performed songs from its Spring Prelude concert and one new additional song, including “Dulaman” arranged by Michael McGlynn, “The Gift to Be Simple” arranged by Bob Chilcott, “Soon Ah Will Be Done” by William Dawson and “Rosas Pandan” arranged by George G. Hernandez.

All choirs participating in the festival were critiqued by two clinicians who recorded audio throughout the performance for the choirs to listen and further improve on their skills. Choirs also watched performances from other schools, including Brea Olinda High School, Los Osos High School, Rancho Cucamonga High School and Mt. SAC.

“My favorite part was when we listened to the Mt. SAC Chamber Singers because they were on another level than any other choir we’ve ever seen. In choir, our ears become sharper, so we’re able to differentiate a mature and immature tone quality,” junior Mia Dimalanta said. “Mt. SAC’s Chamber Singers had a tone quality that we’ve never heard before, and we were left in awe.”

Since February, Chamber began to learn new vocal techniques. By applying these techniques to their performances, singers are able to have brighter tone, better vowel shapes and better breathing.

“I think we sang these songs a lot better than our last performance because [of the] new techniques [we’ve learned],” Mercado said. “We sounded really mature, and we blended really well together compared to other times we’ve sang as a group.”
