Dance competes at Rancho Bernardo High School
Dance Team competed in a West Coast Elite dance competition at Rancho Bernardo High School Saturday, January 18.
The team performed seven different dances in addition to five solo performances. Walnut Dance placed for six out of the seven dances; sixth place in large jazz, fifth in small lyrical, third in medium and large lyrical, third in open and first in kick. Dance Team was also awarded the Audience Choice award for its kick dance.
“There was a big crowd for every dance, and I feel like the other competitors were really supportive of each other,” sophomore Danielle Koay said. “Everyone was cheering on each other and being a really great sport.”
In preparation for the competition, Dance Team held extra practices from 6-7 a.m. on Wednesdays in the gym to arrange spacing. In addition, dancers performed during halftime at basketball games to get used to performing in front of large audiences and extended sixth period practices by three hours for extra rehearsal time to clean up their performance and add new skills.
“We were pretty proud [of our placement] considering we went against really hard schools that were known for placing really well,” freshman Siarra Huang said. “We changed a lot of our kick dance, and we are trying to clean up all of our dances so we could place better in future competitions.”
