Jazz band to perform in barbecue night concert

Intermediate and Advanced Jazz Band will perform in its annual Jazz Barbecue (BBQ) concert Friday, Oct. 5 at the band room patio.

Jazz band will be serving barbecue food such as burgers and chips while they perform swing songs, such as “Sing Sing Sing” by Louis Prima, “On Green Dolphin Street” by Miles Davis and “Leap Frog” by Les Brown.

“There’s a part in one of the songs, ‘Leapfrog,’ where everybody is playing the same part, and it’s loud and full of energy. That gets me excited about it,” Intermediate Jazz Band bass trombonist sophomore Evan Zita said. “[The highlight of the performance is] seeing your family watching you and cheering you on as you go and perform the next piece.”

Jazz Band prepared for this performance by repeatedly practicing the songs during second and third period. Members worked in small ensemble groups to listen and attain a feel for their music.

“Every day during a jazz period, both classes work hard and practice the same songs, so that it sounds good. I feel confident enough in the intermediate group as a whole that we can make it sound like we know what we’re doing,” Intermediate Jazz Band baritone saxophonist junior James Conover said. “As for myself, I’m just happy to be playing music.”
