Marching band invites alumni to perform at homecoming game
Blue Thunder Marching Band performed with alumni as an opener for the annual homecoming game Friday, Sept. 14.
Members worked together to perform contemporary songs such as “Fight Song,” “I’ve Got a Feeling” and “Uptown Funk.”
“It was very gratifying to see previous generations [of band members] see us perform,” alto saxophonist freshman Kevin Huang said. “We really wanted to make [the alumni] proud that marching band is good after they graduated.”
Through Facebook announcements, alumni were invited to participate in the show.
“They come back and show the kids now that they care,” bass clarinetist junior Nayeli Maston said. “It’s not like you leave and forget about band. It sticks with you for the rest of your life.”
Marching Band prepared for the show by improving their straight leg marching technique and selecting different tunes.
“The highlight of the performance was at the very end when we played the long note, and the crowd was really excited,” clarinetist senior Chathurya Wickremasinghe said. “I just felt [the crowd’s] energy, and it was just a great moment for all of us.”
