Orchestra holds its annual Autumn Serenade concert
Advanced Symphonic Orchestra and Intermediate String Orchestra performed at the annual Autumn Serenade Thursday, Nov. 7 at the Performing Arts Center.
Advanced Symphonic Orchestra performed “The Marriage of Figaro Overture” by Mozart, “Sinfonia Concertante” for Violin and Viola by Mozart, “Aconcagua” by Astor Piazzolla and “Conga Del Fuego Nuevo” by Arturo Marquez. Soloists accordionist senior Nancy Xu, violist junior Elsie Lin, violinist junior Daniel Munoz and trumpet player senior Lina Hua performed their respective solos during the concert.
“I was super nervous before I got on stage because I made some mistakes during rehearsal,” Xu said. “However, I managed not to make any mistakes during my solo.”
Lin and Munoz played solo parts in “Sinfonia Concertante” on the viola and violin, respectively. Xu had a featured solo in “Aconcagua” on the accordion. Hua performed a solo in “Conga Del Fuego Nuevo” on the trumpet.
“Being a soloist is a lot of work,” Munoz said. “In a way, it has taught me how to manage my time when I practice by helping me focus on certain parts of the music that is more difficult, rather than just skimming over the pieces.”
Suzanne Challenger Strings also performed “Variations on a Sailing Song”, “Sleeping Beauty Waltz”, “Divertimento No. 2”, “Coiled!” and “Dark Adventure” with Intermediate String Orchestra.
“It was hard to coordinate the timing with the rest of the orchestra during the solo,” Lin said. “Having my friends in the audience that support me no matter what made me less nervous to perform.”
