Preview: Advanced jazz band to perform at California Adventure

Advanced Jazz Band will perform Thursday, Jan. 17 at Disneyland California Adventure for the Community Arts Showcase.

The songs it will play include “Little Brown Jug” by Bill Finegan (arranged by Jeff Hest), “Chattanooga Choo Choo” by Mack Gordon (arranged by Jack Mason), “Pennsylvania 6-500” by Jerry Gray (arranged by Jeff Hest) and “Grooved Merchant” by Jerome Richardson (arranged by Thad Jones). Advanced Jazz Band members practiced over six hours each week in order to hone their technique. Additionally, Jazz Band hosted a concert Friday, Oct. 5 to get extra practice for the performance.

“Everyone is pretty excited. We all enjoy the music we play, so it’s fun to share it with others. It’s definitely forced me to step up my game because I’m with a lot of very talented people,” Advanced Jazz Band senior Alyanna Diaz said.

To participate in this concert, Advanced Jazz Band submitted an audition tape to Disney. The Community Arts Showcase was created to help support arts education in Southern California by allowing young performers to present their talents at the resort.

“I’m really excited since it’s my last Disney performance [with this band]. [Ever] since sixth grade, I’ve been in Jazz Band and have always looked forward to the Disney performances because who doesn’t like Disneyland?” Advanced Jazz Band senior Mia Bravo said. “It’s a good and fun experience and [it’s] kind of bittersweet that six years later, this is my last one.”
