Preview: Dance to compete at Mark Keppel High School
Dance Ensemble will compete in its first West Coast Elite competition of the season Saturday, Jan. 11 at Mark Keppel High School .
The dancers will perform seven group routines: large jazz, large lyrical, medium lyrical, small lyrical, small contemporary, kick and prop. Some songs they will dance to are “Trust” by Prince and “Out of the Woods” by Taylor Swift. They will compete against Chino Hills, El Dorado, Glendale, Hart, Mark Keppel, Palm Desert, Santana, Troy and Xavier.
“I’m looking forward to making new bonds with my team,” freshman Alina Chang said. “We give each other pep talks and tips before we perform, and we cheer each other on. It helps prepare us to do our best.”
The theme for the kick routine is a bellhop—the attendant in a hotel that carries luggage—complete with a fitting costume consisting of a red top with black pants. The theme for the large lyrical routine is watching someone you love grow distant and having to part ways with them. For this routine, they will wear a blue and silver costume.
“I’m excited for the competition because we’ve been working really hard,” co-captain senior Andie Kalinowski said. “It will feel good to have our hard work pay off. It will be fun to dance with [one another] and do what we all enjoy.”
