Preview: Dance to compete at Mater Dei High School

Dance team will attend the Mater Dei Dance Classic Competition Saturday, Jan. 19 at Mater Dei High School.

Members will perform to eight different songs with varying styles, including “River Deep Mountain High” by Celine Dion, “It’s Quiet Uptown” by Kelly Clarkson and “If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys.

“I think we’re all ready [because], during the last competition, we performed really well. We all feel really excited and ready since this is our third competition. [We also] get to spend more time with our seniors. They’re always there to motivate us to do our best,” junior Jordan Takai said.

More than 13 schools located in Southern California will engage in this competition. The judges will grade each performance based on choreography, showmanship and execution.

“We’re preparing for the event by just cleaning and practicing our routines [while] making some minor changes to help. We pick up new [choreography] fairly fast, so these minor changes aren’t too hard to clean and adjust to,” senior Summer Armstrong said. “We’re feeling confident going into this week’s competition because we’re constantly practicing and reviewing our dances.”
