Preview: Rhapsody in Blue prepares for its first competition

Rhapsody in Blue will participate in its first competition of the school year against Diamond Bar High School on Saturday, Feb. 3 at Brea Olinda High School.

They will perform the songs “Someone in the Crowd” by La La Land, “Live in Living Color” by Marc Shaiman, “True Colors” by Tom Kelly and “A Little Party Never Killed Nobody” by Fergie Duhamel.

“I’m definitely nervous because this is going to be my first competition ever, and I don’t really know how everything works yet,” junior Danae Lee said. “It seems pretty stressful because you don’t want to be the one who messes up [because] the judges are watching really carefully, but I think it’ll be a good experience for learning and bonding with the rest of the girls.”

Members started rehearsing their songs since October. During rehearsals, members work on mastering song lyrics, choreography, showmanship and facial expression by running the full show.

“We get scored not only on our musicianship but also our showmanship. We practice these elements because without them, our songs would be boring and lack special meaning,” senior Angela Yang said. “Each song has a different story and different characteristics to it, so we try our best to convey it through our facials.”
