ASB hosts winter sports spirit week, rally

Associated Student Body (ASB) hosted its annual winter sports spirit week with the theme, Mustangs of Menace, from Monday, Jan. 6 to Friday, Jan. 10.

Students dressed in camouflage clothing for Military Grounds Monday and wore clothing from the 1950s to 1990s for Time Bomb Tuesday. On Ready for War Wednesday, they wore workout clothes and on Threaten Your Rivals Thursday, students dressed as frat boys or nerds. The Mustangs of Menace spirit week ended with Final Showdown Friday as students wore their class colors: John Wick white, Kill Bill yellow, James Bond blue and Austin Powers green, for seniors, juniors, sophomores and freshmen, respectively.

“The fact that not a lot of schools do a spy-ish theme is very unique, and I’m glad that we thought of it. We didn’t have to look on anyone’s page or look it up. It was our own idea,” Pep Rally Committee member sophomore Jensine Yu said. “That was a very memorable aspect of it.”

A new change in pep rally procedure was also introduced during the rally. After an ASB exchange hosted by Walnut, in which ASBs from numerous schools met up to bond and discuss ideas, Walnut ASB was inspired to change the way that rallies were run. To save time and prevent mosh pits among classes during the rally, ASB emcees would announce each sport, the captains and the amount of players per class. Prior to the changes, the captains of each sport would lead the announcements.

“[By changing the procedure], we are building up the self-esteem of the freshmen,” Pep Rally Committee member senior Matthew Barsegian said. “Hopefully, they get to carry it on and do the same thing.”
