Walnut High School (WHS) Care and Connect Club distributed over 160 Valentine’s Day cards to teachers and staff Friday, Feb. 12.

Thirteen members started making cards and packaging chocolates at home to show appreciation to faculty Monday, Feb. 1. WHS Care and Connect, whose mission is to share and give back, initially conceived the idea during its first February meeting.

“Teachers, especially with distance learning, might feel like they’re not really connecting with their students,” cabinet member sophomore Alice Kang said. “I thought [giving back] was really nice because it helps them remember why they’re [teaching] and how much students appreciate them.”

Afterwards, president junior Rachel Lee purchased materials with funds she had gathered and distributed them to members at a pickup event. Once members finished, Lee had members turn in their finished cards. On Feb. 12, Rachel, vice president junior Esther Lee and Kang put the cards into teacher’s mailboxes on campus.

“I honestly really enjoyed it because making cards is my artistic relief,” member freshman Zoey Tran said. “With academics, everything is jam-packed with information and you’re always in some form of stress. Drawing and writing is helpful as an outlet for creativity.”
