Walnut hosts Best Buddies Prom
Best Buddies hosted the Best Buddies Prom at Walnut for the first time in the multipurpose room on Friday, April 13.
Students in special education and members of the Best Buddies Club from Azusa, Covina, Diamond Bar, Glendora, Walnut and West Covina High School attended the Best Buddies Prom.
“When we first heard that we were going to [host] it, we were so excited because decorations are fun to do, but as it came closer we were all nervous and excited and so stressed out. Seeing it [come together] was all worth it,” peer buddy organizer junior Jocelyn Sagahon said.
Under the Sea was the final decision that was voted by the buddies out of three theme ideas presented to the students by cabinet, Under the Sea, Mario Kart and City Lights.
“It was such a fun night, and I know that it helped the buddies because they got to do something different. It was meant to be an actual prom. I know that this prom gave them an unforgettable night and a good experience that they would probably never experience,” Sagahon said.
Best Buddies hosted fundraisers and contacted donors to raise money for the prom. Club officers from Walnut took about three months to plan the dance and met during Spring Break to start making decorations. Volunteers from other clubs and cabinet member’s friends and family helped set up the dance.
“We were all so happy with the outcome because there was a lot of things that seemed like they were about to go wrong but then we found solutions to them. Things stack up and we were all working together to fix these solutions and iron out all the flaws. It turned out so well and the cabinet worked so hard. It was like a huge group effort. There was a lot of complications but I’m really proud of the way we adapted to it,” vice president senior Allison Greene said.
