Walnut Key Club hosts backpack drive

Walnut Key Club is hosting its annual backpack drive to donate new and used backpacks to underprivileged schools and students of all ages until Friday, Sept. 28.

The club started the drive Wednesday, Aug. 22, to help disadvantaged children by providing one of the basic necessities for school. The backpacks will be sent to schools in the Walnut Valley Unified School District and to schools in Indio. Maple Hill Elementary School’s REACH Club is collaborating with Walnut Key Club by collecting supplies to fill up the backpacks.

“I think it’s great that we’re able to help out children who are not as fortunate as us. It really brings the community together and shows how we can contribute to society,” cabinet leader and event coordinator senior Ernest Feng said.

Club adviser Justin Panlilio has been organizing the drive for three years and is accepting donations in room F6.

“I feel like I am part of something much bigger than myself,” secretary junior Jasper Wang said. “I am privileged enough to be able to help kids who don’t have the same advantages as me.”
