Walnut Valley Unified School District hosts 21st Annual Salute to Teachers
The Walnut Valley Unified School District hosted the 21st Annual Salute to Teachers Wednesday, Oct. 17 at the Performing Arts Center.
The Annual Salute to Teachers commends teachers and staff across the school district. Walnut High School’s Teacher of the Year Award was given to social sciences teacher Nick Madrid to recognize his efforts during the 2017-2018 school year.
“What I try to do is show students how they can actually use [what they learn] outside the classroom. That’s one of my big goals,” Madrid said. “Where does this apply, where is it useful, how does it translate to real-world situations?”
The administration makes its decision based on a voting session among the teachers from each school. The awards from the Annual Salute are given out to one individual from each school, resulting in a total of 15 awards.
“I enjoy conversing with the students on a daily basis because they [have] a unique perspective and a lot of good ideas. [By] just talking to them, you can get a different worldly perspective,” Madrid said. “Sometimes, it’s amazing seeing what they can produce.”
