Jingles all the way: Kylie Christmas
In Kylie Minogue’s new album “Kylie Christmas,” old Christmas carols are modernized to fit her signature pop, synth-like style. These new melodies are pleasant and relaxing to hear, especially when you want to cheer up with some festive vibes. The warm atmosphere of the first song, “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” creates a sense of belonging and peace to introduce a holiday mood.
Although Minogue adds a new spin on old Christmas songs, there isn’t much difference between her covers and the classics. For example, Minogue’s cover of “Winter Wonderland” sounds almost the same as the original, and it only has slight variations to make it more pop-like. However, her lively voice does make the tone seem loftier and dreamier than the original version.
One of the songs in the album is “Only You,” a duet featuring “Into the Woods” actor James Corden. The song’s lyrics tell a clichĂ©d love story — “All I wanted was the love you gave, all I needed for another day.” However, the interweaving voices of Minogue and Corden are captivating, and the beautiful harmonies created make up for the lack of imagination in the lyrics. In addition, the soft piano background adds to the soothing and gentle nature of the song.
“Kylie Christmas” covers a wide variety of tones and moods, ranging from the festive pace of “Christmas Wrapping” to the jazzy style of “Santa Baby.” Although Minogue’s range in pitch is slightly limited throughout the album, she still adds a refreshing twist to her covers of old Christmas carols that makes each song sound different from its original counterpart. Overall, “Kylie Christmas” is the perfect album to settle down with on a cold winter night surrounded by friends and family.
