Michael Bublé’s shaky return: “Nobody But Me”

7.6

Canadian singer Michael Bublé, affectionately nicknamed the “crooner of the new generation” delivers with his smooth voice in “Nobody But Me,” his ninth studio album featuring three original songs as well as nine covers.

Bublé serenades in “Nobody but Me,” a flirty and light pop song with jazzy vibes that matches the sincerity of the lyrics. Guitar strums and a  moderate pace in the instrumental give the song a sweet, lazy feeling. However, between the redundancy of the chorus and monotonous vocals, the first half of the song feels frustratingly slow–contrary to its teasing tone. Just as the song gets repetitive- Black Thought–guest rapper from the hip-hop group Roots–accompanies Bublé with a rap that compensates for the slower pace.

“My Kind of Girl” is reminiscent of the old, charm 30s music, complete with a Big Band soundtrack. With its swing rhythms and jazz orchestration, this track gives a relaxing tenderness not commonly found in music today. Bublé perfectly imitates the swing style with his lofty voice and soulful expression of the old-fashioned lyrics.

“I Believe in You” contrasts with other songs with its deeper lyrics. Bublé believes in starting over and better times to come in life. The constant shifts in pace of the guitar makes the song and the lyrics evolve and progress with the story. During the pre-chorus, the addition of background vocals adds another layer to the song, as it builds up to the climax. Bublé sings the chorus again with a renewed sense of hope that is palpable in his voice.

Bublé’s album has an overall casual and easygoing air, contributing to its uplifting vibe. Upon first listening, his baritone vocals and smooth voice make for a pleasing experience, but the lyrics and themes of the songs are disappointingly repetitive. Love songs are Bublé’s forte and happen to make up the entire album, so for those who want a bit more variety, I’d suggest a different artist. However, if you’re just looking for reliable serenade, Bublé has you covered.
