Boys soccer defeats West Covina

Varsity boys soccer defeated West Covina 1-0 in a home league game Tuesday, Jan. 8.

Starting the first half, the Mustangs and the Bulldogs frequently traded possessions as both teams struggled to make an offensive push. Eventually, both teams made offensives breaks that resulted in a few shot attempts. Throughout the first half, forward junior Eli Duran made multiple rushes for the goal. Striker junior Kyle Dalan scored a goal with precise passes and teamwork.

“We had a lot more intensity than the other team. I think we worked really well as a unit,” Duran said. “They didn’t really push up that much, and we kept pressuring them at all times.”

During the second half, striker junior Matthew Moreno led the offense by dribbling past the Bulldogs’ defense. Both teams attempted shots at goal, with goalkeeper senior Ethan Martinez making seven saves. In the second half, Walnut kept the score and won 1-0.

“[In the] second half, we slowed down a little bit. Then, they got a couple chances, and we really worked to keep that ball,” Martinez said. “We were going with 100 percent [of our effort] to [every ball]. We weren’t waiting for it [and] that’s why we got all of those opportunities and scored.”
