First cross country meet at Bonelli Park

Cross Country had its first league meet at Bonelli Park on Wednesday, Sept. 14.

Both the varsity and jv girls’ teams placed first in the league. Varsity boys placed fourth, JV boys placed second and frosh/soph placed third.

“The key to getting a good spot in a race is keeping together with your school. If you’re alone, you tend to get more comfortable. You also start to chill and [adopt] mindsets that are detrimental to [your performance] in the race,” sophomore Curtis Trieu said.

In the girls varsity race, sophomore Chloe Arriaga finished first with a time of 18:01, and sophomore Emma Arriaga finished second at 18:41.

“We did amazing, and we got first place. I think it’s because we pushed each other very hard [during the race], gave each other inspirational words of wisdom before the race and trained together as a team,” freshman Nicole Stout said.

The course was a three-mile dirt and grass trail with two uphill slopes.

“It was the best [since] we can in fourth overall. It was just that uphill that split us all apart,” sophomore Daniel Gonzalez said. “West Covina has a really stacked team and they took all three of the first places. It’s only the first race. We can do better next time.”

Varsity will participate in the Woodbridge Invitational Saturday, September 17.
