Varsity baseball defeated nationally ranked No. 2 Bishop Gorman (NV) 3-2 in a preseason game Sunday, Nov. 15 at home. The Mustangs also defeated Nevada-ranked No. 3 Basic 6-1 and No. 4 Desert Oasis 4-1 Saturday, Nov 14.
Starting pitcher junior Jacob Garcia led the Walnut’s defense against Bishop Gorman with a complete game and seven strikeouts.
In the first inning, Bishop Gorman came up on top 0-1 after an early RBI from the Gaels’ cleanup hitter. The Mustangs were able to regain the lead in the third off a two-run double from pitcher senior Cody Dye. However, the Gaels tied it up 2-2 in the fourth. Going into bottom of the sixth inning with runners in scoring position, infielder senior Max Masana drove in the game-winning run after hitting a double up the gap, solidifying the Mustangs’ victory.
“The game was very intense. Both sides going back and forth, and we both wanted to win. The intensity was like a CIF game,” reliever senior Adrian Mendoza said. “We weren’t scared, we were pumped up. We know that we are the best in the San Gabriel Valley, and we wanted to prove that. Beating a team like [Bishop Gorman] motivates us to just work harder and play perfectly every game.”
