Preview: Freshman and junior varsity football plays against Northview
Freshman football (2-1) will play its second straight away game against Northview, while junior varsity football (1-2) will play its first home game of the season against Northview on Friday, Sept. 18 at home at 3:15 p.m.
Riding on a two game win streak, freshman football looks to extend its winning run against a team it will play for the first time this season. The team hopes to improve to 3-1 and earn the best freshman record that the team has had in its first four games since 2012.
“[Northview is] bigger, stronger, more organized than the other teams we played,” quarterback freshman Artie Ramirez said. “Before the game we need to think about our jobs and what we need to do [to win]. We need to stay confident in ourselves to become a better team and on the field, we’re not going to give up no matter what the score is.”
Looking to improve from its 1-2 start, junior varsity football has been working to implement better zone coverages in games by practicing against Northview’s passing plays with the corners and safeties. In addition, quarterback sophomore Nick Aviles has practiced new plays with the wide receivers and tight ends.
“We’ve had two weeks to practice and prepare for this game against Northview. We’ve been fixing our offense and defense and added new plays and coverages because Northview is a passing team,” free safety sophomore Nathan Arias said. “Our mood is great with these two weeks and we’re confident that we can beat Northview with all the practice we had.”
