Track and Field competes in SGV Championships
Track and Field competed against 45 schools in the San Gabriel Valley Championships on Saturday, April 25 at San Dimas High School.
“The weight room workouts helped strengthen my legs so it allowed me put more pressure and run faster without it giving out. Also, I enjoyed the sprints because it helped me build speed so I can come down the runway faster and gain more momentum to push my jump further,” senior Ruth Chen said.
Senior Millen Trujillo led the 800 meter run with a time of 1:57.81 closely followed by senior Ethan Van Setten with a time of 1:58.07 and senior Julian Ortega placed first in shot put with a distance of 46-10.50 which resulted in varsity boys placing third with 36 points.
Frosh/soph boys gained 33 points and ultimately placed fourth with sophomore Danny Oh placing first in pole vault with a height of 12-05.00 followed by sophomore Justin Chau with a height of 11-05.00 and freshman Jaime Minaya placed second in the triple jump by jumping 39-09.00.
“I feel pretty good that I accomplished something because I didn’t expect to jump that far. I expected to get a lot less so I was really surprised,” Minaya said.
Varsity girls, junior Kayla Richardson, junior Kyla Richardson, sophomore Malia Avila and senior Victoria Sandoval, participated in the 4×100 relay and beat the previous school and meet record allowing them to take second place overall with 48 points. Frosh/soph girls tied with Glendora and placed 7th by gaining 16 points.
“We knew we had the race because our time is faster than the other girls and so we went into it with confidence. The weather probably affected our performance but we finished all around good,” Kayla said.
