Varsity boys’ soccer blanks Rowland

Varsity boys’ soccer (2-0-1) blanked Rowland 3-0 Wednesday, Dec. 2 at home.

Goalkeeper senior Ali Naeem blocked a total of six shots throughout the entire game.

Walnut’s defense in the first half forced Rowland four incomplete shots, all blocked by Naeem. On offense, center back junior Alex Rivas led the Mustangs by scoring the first goal for Walnut through a free kick. Right midfielder senior Diego De Leon then assisted forward senior Chris Covarrubias in chipping the ball into the goal, giving the Mustangs another point.

“We’ve been practicing together as a team, and I felt that we had enough chemistry to pull through this game. We could have improved by making more passes and keeping possession of the ball, but overall we did pretty well, and I was glad that I was able to bring the team into the lead early in the game,” Rivas said.

In the second half, Walnut started to pull away as it limited the Raiders to two shot attempts, while midfielder sophomore Alessandro Nova made another goal in the last 5 minutes of the game to seal the victory for the Mustangs.
“In all of our other games, we didn’t have a game plan. For this one, we had a plan. Throughout the game, I felt like we were in control of holding [the lead] because we have a star keeper, and we’ve trained to play the game well,” left wing junior Chris Ryan said. “What ultimately brought us to win this game was definitely the free kick by Alex because that just gave our team a huge confidence boost. We knew that we had to come out strong because these are the games that count for us, and we knew we had to give 100 percent.”
