Varsity boys soccer falls to Azusa

Varsity boys soccer lost to Azusa 1-3 in a home preseason game Monday, Dec. 4.

Walnut and Azusa were evenly matched in the first half, with each side having several opportunities to score. After forward senior Alessandro Nova switched the field with a long pass to senior right midfielder Angel Avilo who crossed the ball into the box, forward senior Angelo de Guzman tapped the ball past the goalkeeper to give Walnut a one-goal lead. However, Azusa countered by consistently keeping possession and scoring before the half ended.

“I think our passing is very consistent and our movement that goes with it [was good],” Avilo said. “[However], we didn’t really play as well as we should have. The other team put in goals because we weren’t defending real well and we conceded them from mistakes.”

In the second half, Azusa forced Walnut to make several fouls by applying high pressure. After consistently keeping possession, Azusa split Walnut’s defensive line with through balls and scored two goals to end the game.

“I think our communication could use some work, and during the game we weren’t really there mentally. I feel that we made a lot of mistakes, but I thought all of my teammates played hard,” forward junior Evan Huang said. “This game showed us that we have to improve more, and I believe that if we work together more as a team we can learn and improve a lot more.”
