Varsity boys tennis defeats Glendora
Varsity boys tennis defeated Glendora 17-1 in a home preseason game Wednesday, April 3.
In the first round, singles player sophomore Jimmy Liu used crosscourt forehands, slices and lobs to beat his opponent 6-1. Doubles players juniors Lenick Tan and Aaron Tang won their set 6-3 by volleying and serving consistently.
“During the first round, all I was thinking about was getting the ball onto the other side. I felt that all I needed to do was to control the ball and get it away from wherever my opponent was,” singles player senior Brandon Wong said. “Honestly, I felt kind of tired during the match, but I wasn’t deterred from keeping the ball in play.”
Wong and doubles players freshmen Ronald Chen and Kaden Salvador each won all of their sets 6-2, 6-0 and 6-1. Singles player junior Lucas Van Zee won the first two sets 6-0 with substitute singles player senior Gavin Lee losing the third 2-6. Doubles players senior Samuel Liu and freshman Ahren Van Zee won their sets 6-1, 7-6 and 6-2.
“At the beginning of my match, I was confident because we had an early lead, but then they began to come back, which made the match more heated. Since [the score] was so close near the end of the match, I started to become frustrated because I was missing many shots and costing us points,” Liu said. “I just need to be more consistent in hitting my serves and volleys to prevent costing us a lot of points.”
