Varsity boys water polo defeats Bonita in preseason game
Varsity boys water polo defeated Bonita 10-5 in a home preseason game Tuesday, Aug. 31.
Bonita began by scoring the first goal of the game. Driver senior Brandon Fabrega matched the score 1-1 less than a minute later, though the quarter ended 3-1 with Bonita in the lead.
“It feels really good to be back in the water and getting my practice in, exercising and bonding with teammates,” Fabrega said. “When we all play our role and do what we’re supposed to, I think everyone does a really good job.”
In the second quarter, Fabrega and set junior Samuel Au started by scoring one point each. Goalkeeper senior Austin Johnson saved six total goal attempts, four of which were consecutive. Fabrega ended the half by scoring three points and an outside goal to secure the score 3-7.
“I balled out and I’m a gamer, so I feel spectacular about today,” Johnson said. “Our communication was down and if we play like that every game, we’re gonna win a lot of games this season.”
Fabrega scored the first goal of the third quarter, followed by two goals from Bonita within one minute. Fabrega scored to end the quarter at 9-5 with less than 60 seconds on the clock.
“I remember looking at my teammates and thinking, ‘Wow that was a good shot,’” Fabrega said. “I feel like I did pretty good today. I couldn’t have done it without my team because everyone has their own role.”
Walnut began the fourth quarter with Fabrega securing his ninth goal three minutes in. Bonita failed to score against Johnson’s save, ending the game with a Walnut victory 10-5.
“It feels cool to be playing again and after an entire year it’s fun to get back,” Johnson said. “We’ve played Bonita before and we’ve won in the past, so it’s nice to know we’re still in the same spot.”
