Varsity boys wrestling defeats Diamond Bar
Varsity boys wrestling defeated Diamond Bar High School 44-21 in a preseason rivalry match Tuesday, Dec. 3 at home.
The Mustangs defeated the Brahmas in the first three matches in the 160 middle weight and 170 to 182 heavyweight classes respectively with senior Jeffrey Lu winning with a score of 12-4 and sophomores Alessandro Jo and Jarod Inan pinning their opponents to secure a 14-0 lead. Diamond Bar scored its first six points with a pin in the 195 weight class but Walnut gained an additional 12 points due to two forfeited matches.
“[To prepare for this match], we practice and worked hard [doing] drills related to things we would do in a match,” Inan said. “Before the [match] we were in the room warming up and practicing the moves we [had practice] and doing some sprints to get the blood flowing in our hearts.”
Starting the second portion, the Mustangs lost twelve points due to pins by the Brahmas under the 120 and 126 featherweight class with both Mustang wrestlers attempting bridges and get outs from under their opponents, setting the score at 26-18. In the following two matches, seniors Brian Lu and Ryan Kim defeated their opponents under the 132 and 138 lightweight class both finishing with pins on their backs.
“I felt pretty confident in my skill, [but] it was just a win. There are still a lot of matches in the season,” Lu said. “I feel like there’s a lot I can work on [to get me to] the top of [my] season.”
The Brahmas next three points were gained under the 145 weight class despite junior Christian Orona gaining six additional points in the final round. The final match involved senior Michael Pham in the 152 middleweight class, who pinned his opponent with a score of 12-2.
“It feels good to win. Before the match [I was] nervous and anxious but once [I got] my hand raised [after winning], it [was] a whole different feeling,” Inan said. “It felt extra special to win since it was against diamond bar.”
