Varsity girls soccer defeats Charter Oak

Varsity girls soccer defeated Charter Oak 2-1 in its last home league game Tuesday, Jan. 29.

The first half kicked off with both teams exchanging possessions, including a breakaway and shot by the Chargers that was saved by goalkeeper senior Juliana Argueta. However, the Chargers scored a goal several minutes later. The Mustangs responded with midfielder senior Kaitlin Wong scoring a free kick, tying the game 1-1.

“It was very stressful, but I was so happy that we won on Senior Night because it was our last home game. A lot of friends came over, so it was really nice,” Argueta said. “We had a few good passes, so we had good momentum.”

During the second half, Argueta prevented the Chargers from scoring with multiple saves. Attacking midfielder senior Nadia Amezcua shot the ball from 30 yards out to secure another goal. Afterward, the Mustangs maintained possession of the ball, ending the game 2-1.

“I think we played great to end the season. We were on a losing streak, [so] it feels good to beat Charter Oak because that’s one of our rivals in the league,” Wong said. “[Senior Night is] to celebrate the seniors for the work they put into the program. It [feels] like a full circle. I remember cheering for all the seniors my freshman year.”
