Varsity volleyball defeated West Covina 3-0 in a preseason home game Tuesday, Sept. 7.

The match began with West Covina’s serve and outside hitter senior Sabrina Evangelista scoring the first point after a rally. Evangelista hit multiple serves and spikes, scoring seven points throughout the set. Setter senior Aubrey Tanner secured the set 25-17 by tipping the ball over the net.

“We did really well as a team because we had a lot of energy,” Evangelista said. “I feel like as we play more games, we get a lot closer and start playing as a family.”

The Bulldogs began the second set with a steady lead, though Walnut matched their score with spikes from Tanner. Libero junior Angelina Rodruigez and setter junior Naomi Chung earned multiple points on serves. Tanner secured the second set 25-17 with a spike.

“I feel really proud of my team,” Evangelista said. “We have been practicing a lot and working really hard to get to where we are. We’re preparing for our league games, which will be tougher, but we’re working towards that.”

Walnut earned the first point of the third set due to West Covina’s failed serve. Evangelista served immediately after, scoring the second point of the set. Towards the end of the set, West Covina hit a failed serve, followed by a successful serve from Chung. The match ended 25-11 with an error from the Bulldogs.

“It feels amazing to play again,” middle hitter senior Caitlin Kelley said. “I love playing and I love my team. It always feels good to win, especially since we were leading by so much.”
