Varsity swim defeats South Hills
Varsity swim defeated South Hills 487-167 in its first home league meet Thursday, March 14.
Swim has competed in five preseason meets so far this season. Swimmers on all four levels were placed in events where they normally do not compete. Captain senior Julian Xu placed first in the 50 freestyle and nearly beat Walnut’s previous varsity boys 50 freestyle record, 21.40, set in 2013.
“I didn’t quite break the record but I came really really close. Five one hundredths of a second away,” Xu said. “I’m hoping to break the record at our [Mount San Antonio College] invite meet [this weekend].”
Varsity girls defeated South Hills with a score of 126-44. Captain junior Lexi Grant, junior Maddie Chow, junior Kelly Poon and freshman Sabrina Bennani led Walnut by taking first in the 200 medley relay at the start of the meet.
“We really got together as a team and won those close races,” Bennani said. “We are already a really strong team with a great fighting spirit, so I feel that we will be able to take the other schools down.”
