Varsity Volleyball defeats Chino

Varsity volleyball defeated Chino 3-0 in the first league game of the season on Wednesday, Sept. 21.

Varsity volleyball’s offense was led by outside hitter senior Jaceylin Tan, who made 10 spikes and two tips. Overall, the Mustangs had a total of 19 spikes, four tips, and seven blocks.

“Every individual has to contribute for us to be successful together, so I was just trying to contribute so that we can all just play well together,” Tan said.

In the beginning of the first set, Walnut and Chino were closely matched until Walnut got a side out by a service error from Chino. From there outside hitter junior Janell Currier and Tan were both able to score 4 spikes each.

During the second set, the Mustangs started with a strong defense led by libero senior Rachel Lau. Chino was unable to return many of Walnut’s serves which caused a quick end to the set, making the score 25-15.

“I think we did really well together and we had good teamwork. We were cheering each other on and were really supportive of each other no matter what happened. Its our first league game; we want to start off strong and we did so that’s good,” Lau said.

Walnut secured an early advantage at the end of the game, outscoring Chino 7-2 and was able to maintain its lead throughout the set by using several ace serves and multiple spikes. The Mustangs won the game with a score of 25-19 in the third set.

“Chino has improved a lot from last year, so we had to definitely be on our game. I was proud of my team. I’m happy with the way we played. We practiced what we played in the game and I was pleased with that.” Currier said.
