Varsity Volleyball defeats Duarte
Varsity volleyball won 3-0 against Duarte High School in a preseason home game Thursday, Sept. 5.
The Mustangs pulled ahead in the first set with five serves in a row by libero freshman Angelina Rodriguez. Near the end of the set, setter sophomore Aubrey Tanner served two consecutive aces, clinching the 23rd and 24th points for the Mustang. The first set was won 25-10 as Falcons were penalized for being out of rotation.
“Today’s game was a little slow, but we’re getting better at starting off [strong] and our team’s working really well together. We’re communicating. We could do better on the energy, but we’re getting there,” middle blocker captain senior Emily Chan said. “During the game, everyone tries to cheer each other on whether we’re on the bench or on the court and [tries] to talk about what we can do better.”
The Mustangs won the second set 25-14 with spikes from outside hitter senior Amber Johnson combined with blocking. In the third set, the Mustangs were down 18-21 before varsity coach Angela McElroy called a timeout. Despite a weaker start on the third set, the Mustangs were able to use their momentum and clinch the third set 25-22.
“I felt really anxious, but I had faith in my team. I knew that we were gonna come back, but even if we didn’t, we had the fourth and fifth set,” middle blocker junior Esther Li said. “Our coach has a saying that the third set is always the hardest to win. So I’m happy we came back in the end.”
