Discord, a popular social media app, rolled out their new mobile update on Dec. 5. The new changes are driven by their goals to improve communication and group messaging. In my opinion, the update is a decent addition that is somewhat unnecessary.
The update includes a new navigation tab, separate tabs for servers, messages and notifications. A “You” tab was also added which enables users to easily edit their profile and settings. The update also includes enhanced organizational features, visual customization options and improves the overall functionality. The app is more organized and a better fit to easily get to my messages. Servers are also more customizable and these features allow for more options to search for the things I want to.
A new “dark mode” is also available for users that go on Discord in Organic Light Emitting Diodes, which are ideal for portable devices. There are more themes and available choices to personalize my experience. I also like how the contrast between the text and background is more visible and how the update is good and refreshing.
I go on the app often to message my friends, and I personally enjoy new things. There were only a few downsides to the update which included how the friends section disappeared and how it is harder to navigate through messages. The spacing between the text is also a bit weird and looks off to me, and I enjoy the previous version of text differently that was easier to read.
Despite the improved changes, it is still a bit difficult to get through Discord only because everything is new. I found it confusing to use the app in the beginning, but things got better when I became familiarized with the update and locations of the buttons.
I really enjoy this new update because it is a much-needed improvement for Discord. It is a more user-friendly and improved platform for communication that would definitely make me use the app more often. I would give the update a 7/10.
