Choir ended the year with its “Spring Pops” showcase on May 3-4 in the Performing Arts Center.
All five choir ensembles performed popular songs from Disney movies. Not only was this the last “Spring Pops” for this year’s seniors, but it’s also the last for choir director Lisa Lopez. Lopez will be stepping down from her position here to teach choir at the elementary level starting next year.
“It’s bittersweet to know that it’s my last ‘Spring Pops’ as well as Mrs. Lopez’s. I’m happy I was able to have my last spring pops with Mrs. Lopez still as my director,” Treble Choir and Rhapsody in Blue member senior Natalie Wang said. “Being a senior, I started in the Covid year, completely online. I’m happy I stayed [in choir] all four years. Looking at how much the program has transformed, it’s really heart warming to know that I was a part of it.”
Each song was accompanied by unique choreography, props and costuming aligning to the energy of the song, making for a variety of different performances throughout the concert.
“It’s pretty enjoyable to go through the songs and the choreography. It’s not a bad process; it’s definitely worth it,” Men’s Ensemble member senior Samuel Soto said. “We ended up getting these sweatbands for ‘I’m Just Ken’ so that was really fun to work with.”
Choir Buddies–a program that allows eighth grade students to be paired with a choir student from Walnut–also joined in as they performed two songs, “Proud Corazon” and “Sing It Together,” alongside choir members who volunteered to be in Choir Buddies. Members held practice sessions every month throughout the school year, finally leading up to their last performance.
“This is our last concert and we had our buddies sing with us for two of those songs,” Rhapsody in Blue member junior Kacy Chen said. “I’m pretty sad about this as throughout the year we’ve [created] a really deep bond with each other.”
