Located in a tucked away corner at Hong Kong Plaza, Fat Daddy Fried Chicken in West Covina serves a short but tasteful menu serving fried foods galore.
My meal consisted of fried chicken (breast and thigh), which was deep fried in a sweet seasoning. This part of the meal was the highlight for me. The sweetness of the chicken skin complimented the chicken well. I completely devoured this part of the dish, and for the cheap price of $8 for three pieces, this was a good deal.
While scouring the menu, I realized I could make my meal into a combo and save some money so I decided to add an assortment of fries, potato mash and a soda. I ordered crinkle-cut fries, french fries and sweet potato fries in a paper bag. These fries were extremely soggy but very flavorful. The normal french fries tasted like a fry straight from McDonalds, the crinkle-cut from Raising Cane’s but the sweet potato fries were very sweet and tasty, almost like a dessert treat.
The final part of my meal was the potato salad. The salad had a sweet and salty taste, which complimented the chicken very well. However, the salad was extremely dry and left an unpleasant sticky feeling inside my mouth. This small side was probably the worst part of the meal but still gave some diversity in the foods they sell.
The ambiance of the mom and pop shop was very cluttered and loud. Given it is in the middle of an enormous shopping center, the workers are very calm and collected for how stressful the atmosphere can become. The staff was extremely nice and gave me a complimentary drink for their soft opening.
I feel like this restaurant has a lot to work on, but what they have so far – the chicken – is very satisfying. The food didn’t take much time to prepare and came out fresh. I would recommend just getting their fried chicken because the side dishes are subpar, and I could tell that they are just known for their fried chicken. I would give Fat Daddy Fried Chicken a 3 out of 5 overall, but the fried chicken in particular is a 5 out of 5.
