Varsity girls soccer lost to Don Lugo 2-4 at a preseason home game on Monday, Dec. 9.
Don Lugo kicked off the first half and went on full attacking. After several possessions, errors and turnovers by both teams, the Conquistadors scored the first goal of the game. Walnut would soon after have a comeback with a goal from forward junior Isabella Aguilar and a goal from midfielder junior Bella Sandoval.
Although the Mustangs were ahead, the Conquistadors would catch up by elevating their offense. Walnut’s defense in blocking and stealing the ball were also not enough against Don Lugo’s strong defense and goalie play at the end of the half. The first half concluded with a score of 2-2.
“In the first half it was kind of rough. We were doing good in the beginning. We were attacking and dominated pretty much all of the first [half]. I was proud of our team and how we really kept up with them even though we were tied,” striker captain senior Vianna Alvarez said.
The second half started off tough when a player scored a self goal, causing the Mustangs to trail 2-3. With the Mustangs’ good ball control and blocks from the goalie, the Conquistadors had a hard time scoring and would soon get the first yellow card. As the game progressed, the Lady Mustangs made multiple errors. There would also be a yellow card and penalties against Walnut. Although the goalie slid to the right, it was not enough to block it, and the game ended with a final score of 2-4.
“We really want to make sure to give each other encouraging words even if we are losing and to believe in each other,” fullback senior Kailyn Ohara said. Ω
