Varsity boys basketball defeated the Workman High School Lobos 65-58 on Dec. 11 at home.
Operating a fast-paced game plan, the Mustangs’ offense and ability to score a variety of baskets around the court gave Walnut an early 17-9 lead in the first quarter. In the second quarter, despite many turnovers, the Mustangs continued to extend the gap by getting multiple defensive stops, causing the Lobos multiple empty possessions and a Mustang lead of 29-19.
“The first quarter went good for the most part, and we executed well. We could have been more effective in our offense and defense to improve our turnovers and play smarter,” shooting guard junior Jeremiah Vasquez said. “I played all right, but I know I can do better and step up my game for the team.”
In the third quarter, Workman began to gain momentum with back-to-back stepback three pointers. However, the Mustangs increased their court physicality and exposed Workman’s paint vulnerability through continuous drives, concluding the quarter with a score of 49-37.
Maintaining their offensive and defense intensity, Walnut was able to fend off their opponents throughout the fourth quarter, draining multiple free throws and three point shots down the stretch. The game concluded with a final score of 65-58, their first win on home court.
“In the second half, we cut down our turnovers and took care of the ball better. I also thought we rebounded better,” head coach Joe Khouzam said. “Even though it’s just a regular non-conference game for us, everything builds us up for getting ready to play league seasonal games.” Ω
