After a tightly contested game, varsity girls basketball defeated Colony High School 43-40 at home on Tuesday, Dec. 10.
The game started with the Mustangs’ defense unable to keep Colony at bay with their lead of points, but their offense pushed through with a multitude of fast baskets. Although leading 9-8 during the last thirty seconds of the first quarter, Colony scored, resulting in a 9-10 Walnut deficit.
Walnut went on a scoring streak throughout the second and third quarters, with Colony unable to fend off the Mustangs’ continuous offense. Paired with strong defense and quick communication between the players, Walnut led the second quarter 21-18 and sealed the third quarter 32-25 with two free throw shots.
By the fourth quarter, Colony caught up with a few shots, but the Mustangs efficiently guarded the paint area and ended the game with two clutch 3-point shots that concluded the game with a final score of 43-40.
“This win brought our confidence up by a lot, and now we can build a good winning record to have a chance at getting to CIF,” shooting guard senior Emmy Lim said. Ω
