Orchestral sounds fill the theater, Laufey plucks her cello and the crowd sings along with her in a gleeful performance of “I Wish You Love.”
Popular singer-songwriter and musician Laufey’s concert movie, “Laufey’s A Night at the Symphony: Hollywood Bowl” was released on Dec. 6. The movie captured her sold out show at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on Aug. 7 that featured the Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestra.
The concert opened with “Above the Chinese Restaurant,” instantly bewitching the audience with her rich and soothing voice. The first few songs felt more melancholic, paying homage to how far she has come both with her career and self-growth. With performances of “Letter To My 13 Year Old Self” and “Slow Down,” I felt greatly moved by the bittersweet lyrics and tone.
After an intermission, Laufey sang a mix of new and old releases accompanied by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. Some popular songs included “Valentine,” “From The Start” and “Let You Break My Heart Again.” The grandeur orchestral sound, along with her voice resonating throughout the theater, made a much more beautiful listening experience than what I was used to. Occasionally, she would also incorporate her cello and piano playing. The performance that stood out to me the most was “Goddess,” with Laufey’s powerful, emotional vocals paired with the orchestra’s crescendo.
Having been a fan of Laufey since the release of her debut album “Everything I Know About Love” in 2022, this was a healing experience for me, hearing all the songs I had once played on repeat or even covered on piano. The immersive environment was enough for me to feel as if I had attended the actual concert itself. Her charm and presence shone through the screen and each performance made me feel a whirlwind of emotions.
This concert movie marks another milestone for Laufey’s success as she continues to grow in popularity for her music. Playing at the Hollywood Bowl was one of Laufey’s childhood dreams—and to see her accomplish that and perform with such happiness made me feel inspired to keep working toward mine as well.
With breathtaking and pleasant performances, clear audio and scenes shot from many angles, this movie deserves a 5 out of 5 stars. I believe this movie is a good alternative for fans that were unable to attend the concert or people simply hoping to explore a new artist and perfectly captured Laufey’s magical night.
