Varsity football lost to Covina High School 21-24 at home on Thursday, Oct. 24.
On defense, the Mustangs secured a turnover by tackling the opponent. Walnut gained a few yards, and after a few incomplete passes, they were brought to their fourth down. At the 44 yard line, Covina’s quarterback ran through the Mustangs’ defense to score a touchdown in the fifth minute. Soon after, the Mustangs’ accurate passes and runs would result in a touchdown in the 53rd second. The first quarter ended with the score of 7-7.
As the second quarter began, Covina’s quarterback threw the ball to his teammate who was running to the end zone and scored a touchdown at the 11th minute. The Mustangs then scored a touchdown in the last two minutes when a player in the endzone caught the pass from the quarterback. In the last few seconds, Covina scored a field goal, ending the second quarter 14-17. The score was the
same in the third quarter.
“I felt that in this game, I was a little slower. I made a couple plays, but I think when my number was called for me to make some big plays, I missed some opportunities. But it’s all part of the game,” corner and receiver senior Keneh Ejike said.
In the eighth minute of the last quarter, the Colts’ quarterback handed the ball to his teammate, who ran to score a touchdown. The Mustangs continued to gain momentum by scoring a touchdown in the fifth minute. The game ended with a score of 21-24. “[The team is] one family, one brotherhood and we got to stay together through the tough times and to make it out as we can,’’ corner and wide receiver senior Jacob Rodriguez said.
