If you look at the bottom right corner of your Tiktok “For You” page, you might see a rotating black disc showing what sound is being used for that video. Whether that is a new song from Sabrina Carpenter or an original sound from a creator, this spinning icon is modeled around a modern day vinyl record.
Spinning Plate Records is a small record store located in West Covina, California. The store had temporarily closed down in February of 2024 after a storm caused unfixable damage to the building, but in July of 2024 reopened in a new spot in West Covina in the corner of an outdoor strip mall. The store is a small, but cozy establishment with a great welcoming atmosphere allowing people to buy, sell and trade records.
From the mid to late 1900’s, vinyl records were the main distribution of music. Ranging from hip-hop to country, vinyl records were a staple in the modern landscape and regarded as one of the most influential pieces of media back then. Recently, owning a record player and spinning some vinyl has become more and more trendy.
As my dad and I entered the store, we were greeted by the shopkeeper and heard music coming out of the big twin stereo speakers in the front of the store. Right away, I noticed records and posters on the lined walls giving the store a modern, but retro feel. The vinyl was stored well, easily accessible and had a good selection of albums to choose from, ranging from artists like The Smiths to Snoop Dogg.
Along with vinyls, they had cassette tapes, CDs, VHS tapes and more. Their prices were a bit expensive, but it’s a reasonable price given they are just reopening. My dad and I got The Low End by the well renowned classic hip hop group, A Tribe Called Quest for $27. It came in a sleek vinyl sleeve, and the vinyl was brand new in the saran wrap it came in. My main takeaway was how the procedures for caring for their records are top notch.
Overall, I’d say that this record store is one I’d return to. I admire how well they handle their product, and how friendly the staff is when asking questions. If you’re thinking about starting a collection, or have one already, this store is one I would heavily recommend.
