Varsity girls tennis defeated Glendora 11-7 at home on Tuesday, Oct. 22.
In the first round, doubles two seniors Krissie Pongvattanasomporn and Chloe Wang struggled with their serves as the round progressed. However, In the end, they came out strong leading to a final score of 6-3.
“My partner and I usually communicate a lot and keep changing our strategies since sometimes one thing will work, and when our opponents catch on, we have to change our playing style,” Pongvattanasomporn said. “We have a set strategy where I attack at the front after the receive, and so that puts a bit more pressure on our opponents.”
In the second round, singles three freshman Addyson Wu won her set 6-3, leading to her final result of two matches won. As her opponent tired out, Wu hit harder and more precise, pushing herself to do better.
“Something just clicked. I just started playing really well by hitting the balls really hard and with a lot of spin. I was really proud,” Wu said. “On my ending point for the second round, I did a short volley, and that went past my opponent; it was a great point to end the whole match.”
In the third round, doubles one seniors Abigail D’Souza and Annabel D’ Souza won 6-0, ending their game with a win for all sets. Together, they coordinated their plays and encouraged each other throughout their matches.
“We were coordinating really well, and I think we just had a lot of trust in each other that day,” Abigail D’Souza said. “We try to focus on their technique so we can mentally prepare for how they’re going to play and coordinate.”
On senior night, each of the underclassmen on the team was assigned one of the nine seniors to make them posters and baskets to show their appreciation for their teammates.
“My cheeks were hurting from how much I was smiling because they all put in so much effort into everything. I was so touched by it [and] you could see how much they knew us through the gifts that they got us,” D’ Souza said. I was sobbing when I read the things they wrote, and I’ll definitely miss them.”
