The Choir Department hosted their annual Solo & Acapella Showcase on March 1 in the multi-purpose room. In addition to solos, duets and small ensembles, the showcase featured performances from Chamber Singers, Men’s Ensemble and Treble Choir.

The concert featured numerous popular and modern numbers such as “Jolene” by Dolly Parton and “Coney Island Baby” by Lou Reed. Mostly composed of love songs, there were also soloists and small ensembles who performed different songs.

“Personally, my favorite song was “Tell Him” by Bette Midler because we opened the show with it and the song is fun itself,” Treble Choir freshman Kiersten San Diego said. “My favorite part of this concert was being able to watch the other choir performances since we can’t do that in other concerts.”

Men’s Ensemble performed different love-themed songs, and the men in Chamber Singers also performed in small ensembles. Chamber and Men’s Ensemble senior Saif Otoum performed a solo of “Don’t You Dare (Make Me Fall in Love with You)” by Kaden MacKay, in addition to his group performances.

“My favorite was my solo song [because] it’s a song I’ve loved for a long time and I think I did a really good job, but I also loved ‘Jolene’,” Otoum said. “I love that song and I really liked the arrangement we did.”

It was evident from being in the audience how the choir students supported each other, on and off stage. The good vibes radiated throughout the room and were clear in the loud cheers following each performance.

“[This concert] was fun, it was cool to see all the acapella pieces,” Treble Choir junior Sarah Kawata said. “In spring, we have our Pops concert, and it is always the most fun to perform in because there is dancing and more modern music.”
