Doubles three junior Leo Xu hits a forehand crosscourt shot. “My leaning was to create an angle where the ball would curve over to the left side of the court,” Xu said. “When I hit shots it all depends on the situation.”

Varsity boys tennis triumphed over Los Altos 15-3 Thursday, March 23 at home.

After the first few matches being dominated by the singles players, singles reserve sophomore Dylan Wang was subbed in and lost two sets. Singles reserve sophomore Marcus Phan was then subbed in and turned it around with a 6-2 win. By using his strong forehand, Phan was able to finish out his set.

“My forehand was very consistent with good power which ultimately helped me win the set for my team,” Phan said. “Los Altos was an easier team but whatever the team is, I tend to play down to the level they’re at. This is because your shot is dependent on the kind of shot the other team hits at you.”

I think our performance was pretty good. I like to play tennis because it’s sort of like therapy to take out stress [onto the ball].

Though the singles’ sets were won with ease, the doubles’ sets were entirely dominant with a score of 6-0 for all matches. Doubles three junior Leo Xu and sophomore Calvin Bautista used serves and forehands to achieve a set without losses.

“Most of the time I am constantly thinking and deciding which shots are the best to take,” Xu said. “I think our performance was pretty good. I like to play tennis because it’s sort of like therapy to take out stress [onto the ball].”

Doubles two juniors Alan Ho and Aidan Lam continued the success alongside Xu and Bautista with their own 6-0 win.

“I think we both played great and we had good communication with each other,” Ho said. “Any strong or powerful shots or hitting into an area where the opponent couldn’t run helped us to win.”
