With his mental toughness and determination, sophomore Jack Li prevails at table tennis as he continues to utilize his quick speed and strong forehand to excel in his professional career.

He currently has a rating of 1500 in the USA table tennis system (USATT) and trains four to five days a week to improve his game. To play table tennis proficiently, he hopes to train both his mental and physical aspects to best prepare himself.

“It’s very important to relax myself in order to not feel stiff. I can’t move around the table when I am nervous and that leads to me missing or completely misfiring,” Li said. “I have to be ready to give all I got so that I am not afraid to go for shots.”

Table tennis also comes with its difficulties, as Li struggles with serving and pressure when competing. However, he overcomes that by looking for his coach’s guidance that ultimately is a crucial part of Li’s success.

“My coach tells me that I have to play with more confidence in tournaments and that getting through the barriers will make me a better player. I am very motivated to get better, so I listen to any advice,” Li said.

Li is inspired by Xu Xin, a professional table tennis player known for his masterful footwork and consistent work ethic. Li hopes to model his game after Xin through the videos he sees of Xin’s table tennis rallies.

“I see many cool rallies and shots on videos. I want to be like that too and that is my motivation for playing. I also learn to keep fighting and not give up even though I might be behind,” Li said.

Li feels a rewarding feeling while playing table tennis that he gets nowhere else. He has been playing ever since he was 13 and began his professional career last year. When he beats his opponents and sees his hard work paying off, he feels a sense of motivation and pride.

“I just feel something different about [table tennis] than other sports and hobbies. I hope that other people can see that as well and feel the same,” Li said. “I hope to play [in] college or even join the US national team later in the future.”
