Choir’s Winter Concert was held on Dec. 4-5 in the Performing Arts Center (PAC) at 7 p.m. featuring a variety of winter tunes.
This concert marked the first time choir director Andrew Perez directed a double show concert. This year’s selection of songs aimed to encompass many diverse holidays and aspects of winter.
“There’s no specific winter theme because [that] gets very narrow,” Perez said. “I love winter music because you get a lot of slow, beautiful songs, [which] I love.”
Act One of the concert began with Chamber Singers performing “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town” by Harry L. “Kiddy” Orysmyr. Treble Choir followed with “The Winter Owl” by Paul David Thomas. Solos from Treble Choir members included “Santa Baby” by Eartha Kitt sung by freshman Madeline Cheng and “Christmas Song” by Back Number sung by senior Vitalia Wu. Mustang Singers sang their set with “Winter Moon” by Jordan Ricks and “O Nata Lux” by Thomas Tallis. Rhapsody In Blue ended the set merrily with “Last Christmas” by Wham!
Due to the low number of Bass Choir members this year, the Treble and Bass choirs performed “Winter Wonderland” by Richard Himber together, marking the first time in Walnut history they did so. Treble Choir then performed “Dona Nobis Pacem” by Johann Michael Haydn, and Rhapsody In Blue followed with “Woods In Winter” by Reid Spears. Solos included “A Night To Remember” by Laufey and Beabadoobee sung by Treble Choir members senior Francesca Cortes and sophomore Darla Contreras, “Jack and Sally” from ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ sung by Treble Choir members sophomore Kirra Chin and senior Roman Macali and “O Come Little Town of Bethlehem” sung by Bass Choir member sophomore Tobias Silva-Jameson. Chamber Singers ended the concert with “Flight Song” by Kim André Amesen and “Go Tell It On The Mountain” by Stacey Gibbs.
“My favorite song was ‘Flight Song.’ It is fun [and] when we sing it, the harmonies sound beautiful,” first year Chamber Singers member junior Angel Hernandez said.
Closing off the concert with their annual tradition, all choirs came together, with seniors singing “Peace Peace” by Rick and Sylvia Powell, accompanied by underclassmen singing “Silent Night” by Joseph Mohr.
“I was excited, since I’ve been in the program all four years and that it was my turn to sing ‘Peace, Peace,’” Rhapsody In Blue member senior Victoria Bernal said. “‘I’m sad about [this being my last winter concert], because it is my favorite.” Ω
