Varsity boys soccer defeated Edgewood High School 2-1 at home on Dec. 3.
The first half started with the Mustangs on the defensive lineup. As the game progressed, both Walnut and Edgewood had strong defense and offense, which led to several turnovers. Although both teams were close to scoring a goal, the first half ended with a tie score of 0-0.
“First half, I thought we dominated. We just couldn’t find the back of the net,” head coach Wilson Moreno said.
The second half became more intense as the Mustangs switched the lineup by adding four strikers. After both teams tried to score, a handball penalty rewarded Edgewood with the first goal in the 24 minute. Soon after, Walnut gained momentum after captain center back junior Ethan Prittie scored a header from a corner kick. At the 12 minute, Prittie would score the winning goal after another corner kick. The second half ended 2-1.
“I thought our play with the four strikers really dictated the tempo,” Moreno said. “The boys consistently play hard. That’s never a question. But today, I thought they were more composed on the ball. They completed passes right to their teammate, and I thought they were creative in the attacking third. This was our best game.” Ω
