Varsity girls basketball fell to Bonita High School on their Senior Night, with a close game of 30-34 on Wednesday, Jan. 28.
The Bearcats opened the game with the first three points, leading before the Mustangs tied it with a series of strategic attacks, leaving the score 7-7 at the end of the first quarter. The Mustangs maintained their momentum with strong defense in the second quarter and took the lead 13-11. The Bearcats responded in the third quarter with consecutive three pointers, surging ahead 18-24. In the fourth, the Mustangs rallied with accurate passing and aggressive plays, closing the gap to 26-27 with a minute remaining. The final minute of the game was tense, with both teams trading fouls and free throws, ending in a close 30-34 victory for Bonita.
“We played a good game,” varsity girls basketball head coach Michael James said. “The biggest thing we learned was that we can play and compete with anybody. We don’t really worry about as much what the other team’s going to do, we worry about how we play and getting good at the things that we do.”
At the end of the game, Senior Night honored varsity girls basketball small forward and power forward captain Madison Shih, who played her last home game with her team. As the only senior, she experienced a night filled with memories and emotions.
“I was really motivated since it was my last home game. I feel like we were almost there, but we had a really good effort and we played with a lot of heart,” Shih said. “I’m gonna really miss playing with my girls and being in an organized team. I’m really happy that it happened, but [it’s] just bittersweet.” Ω
