Varsity wrestling won against Diamond Bar on Tuesday, Jan. 27 with a score of 60-6 for boys and 77-6 for girls.
The Mustangs lost only one match across both the girls and boys teams, with strategic plays and effective coaching. Coach Cecil Sebastian was involved in both teams’ matches exuberant about the win.
“The kids performed well. They were ready for the match. They were excited. It was Senior Night, so I don’t think there was much of a challenge, and the score speaks for itself. I think the kids were just excited to wrestle and compete,” Sebastian said.
Varsity wrestling is currently undefeated in their league starting the matches against the Brahmas strong. Despite this, the Brahmas executed takedowns but most of the wrestlers still managed to hold on. Ultimately, effectively winning the match by either major decision, or by points, the Mustangs were victorious.
However, it wasn’t an easy battle. Senior Emi Yoshii competed in the 105 weight class and is a testament of the mentally tough mindset of the wrestlers when they battle. Despite it being her last match of the season, she still loved her final match.
”It was nice that my family and my friends came out there to support me [at the match] as well as my teammates and my coaches, and knowing that it was my last dual match of my high school career, it was a little sad, but overall, I think it was really fun being able to celebrate my last moments as a wrestler,” Yoshii said.
